King Arthur’s School fully recognises its responsibilities for safeguarding children and works with the Local Authority and other agencies to ensure the safety of children and young people in our care. Becky Smith is the Designated Safeguarding Lead who is a member of our Senior Leadership Team. The DSL is also the PREVENT lead and the main point of contact for Looked After Children
The safeguarding team meet regularly and share information to ensure the safety of all our students. Each concern is treated with dignity and respect and we then work closely with families, external agencies, and the students themselves to ensure receive the appropriate level of support.
As a school we aim to create a culture of vigilance. All staff within the school are aware that safeguarding the students in our care is everyone’s responsibility and that we always work in the best interests of the child, listening to the voice of the child wherever possible. The health, safety and wellbeing of every child is our paramount concern and that is why we listen intently to our students and their concerns.
The children’s views and concerns are represented by the Student Safeguarding Council who meets each half term. The council changes annually and school prefects take on responsibility for different areas from safeguarding to mental health and wellbeing. The school has an open door policy so any student at any time can report or discuss any concerns they may have.
To promote a safe environment for students, our selection and recruitment policy includes all checks on staff and regular volunteers’ suitability, including Disclosure and Barring Service checks. All staff, governors and volunteers are encouraged to foster an attitude that ‘it could happen here’ and they are made aware, and reminded of, the protocols to follow should they have a concern about a child or young person’s safety or well-being.
Throughout the academic year we raise the profile of safeguarding and safer schools with assemblies on Bullying, Sexual and Gender Identity, Internet Safety, Diversity, Domestic Abuse, Abusive Relationships and many more. This ties in with our PSHE and RSHE programmes.
Early Help
We believe at King Arthur’s that getting Early Help can avoid things getting really bad for children who are struggling to cope through a difficult time by helping for short periods. We work together with other organisations and agencies so that children and their families are assisted to help themselves and are supported as soon as a need arises, improving their overall wellbeing and quality of life.
