Admissions to King Arthur’s School

Applying for a school place

Throughout Somerset there is a policy of “local schools for local children”. Each school is surrounded by a catchment area from which its students come. King Arthur’s School has nine designated catchment schools:

  • Wincanton Primary School
  • Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School
  • Upton Noble CofE VC Primary School
  • Bruton Primary School
  • St Nicholas CE Primary School, Henstridge
  • Horsington Church School
  • Charlton Horethorne CE Primary School
  • Abbas and Templecombe Primary School
  • Milborne Port Primary School

Please note that parents and carers can apply to King Arthur’s School, even if they do not live in the catchment area. Parents will be given their first choice preference of school wherever possible. Where demand exceeds available places preference is given in the following order:

  • Students with a statement of Special Educational Needs that names King Arthur’s as the preferred school
  • Students whose older brother or sister is attending the school
  • Students who live closest to the school

It is not expected that any parents who have expressed a preference will be refused admission to King Arthur’s School for their son or daughter.

 

In-Year Admissions

Parents/carers of prospective students who wish to be considered for admission to King Arthur’s School during the school year should contact the school directly. If there are spaces available in the appropriate year group, a tour of the school will be arranged with a member of our Senior Leadership Team, along with a chance to meet and discuss the application process.

Joining in Year 7

All applications for a secondary place in September 2020 must be made to your home authority. To apply for a place in Year 7 at King Arthur’s for September 2020, please visit Somerset County Council’s school admissions page, using the link below.

If your application is unsuccessful, details of how to appeal the decision will be enclosed in the decision letter.

 

Transition from Primary School to Secondary School

We know how important the move from primary to secondary education is and we make sure this is a priority at King Arthur’s School. A programme is in place to ensure a positive experience for students transferring to our school. The arrangements are reviewed with our partner schools each year to achieve the best possible transition and to make sure we have shared all information about our future students.

In addition to the open events, there are opportunities for visits throughout the year between staff at King Arthur’s School and those at our partner schools. We also make sure there are several opportunities for our future students to visit the School and feel comfortable and engaged with all we have on offer.

Later in the school year there will be a chance to me with the Head of Pastoral / SENDCo and tutors who will be responsible for the students on transfer. Your son or daughter will have the opportunity to visit King Arthur’s during the school day towards the end of the summer term to get a first-hand experience of the school. Parents and students will also be invited to an induction evening, along with open days, which are held in the autumn term.

If you are unable to attend one of our open days, please contact the school office and we will be happy to arrange a tour of the school with a member of our Leadership Team.

 

Claiming Free School Meal Entitlement

King Arthur’s School is an academy and part of SAST (The Sherborne Area Schools’ Trust).  Applications for Free School Meals should now be completed online through Dorset Council.  For more information and to apply for Free School Meals click here.

 

School Transport

School transport for all applicants transitioning from primary school will be automatically allocated if applicable as part of their application to the local authority.
