AIMS OF PE
PE has a distinctive contribution to make to the aims of the National Curriculum. The PE programme of study provides opportunities to plan sequences of work, learning outcomes and teaching approaches that develop successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.
CURRICULUM
The PE programme supports the personal development of students through the five Every Child Matters outcomes and directly complements the Personal Learning and thinking skills outlined in the new National Curriculum.
The range of content is taught through a variety of sporting and creative activities which emphasise the multi abilities of the students.
YEAR7, 8 & 9

OUTWITTING OPPONENTS The concept of outwitting an opponents is developed through activities such as netball, football, hockey, rugby, basketball, badminton, tennis and volleyball.
ACCURATE REPLICATION The ability to repeat actions, phrases and sequences of movement with precision and quality is taught through activities such as dance, trampolining and athletic events.
EXPLORING & COMMUNICATING IDEAS, CONCEPTS & EMOTIONS Expressive concepts are taught through dance and students are encouraged to communicate their thoughts and ideas when discussing tactics and team work in games activities.
PERFORMING AT MAXIMUM LEVELS The concept that students perform at their maximum levels where their success is measured by personal best times and scores is provided through activities such as swimming and athletics.
IDENTIFYING & SOLVING PROBLEMS This concept is taught through guided learning and reciprocal teaching styles in conjunction with challenge activities.
EXERCISING SAFELY & EFFECTIVELY Students are taught the principles of exercising safely and effectively in each activity. They study general components of fitness and measure their own performance with a focus on well being and healthy active lifestyles. |
ASSESMENT
Students are assessed through multi abilities using an Assessment for Learning Profile Wheel, where they have an opportunity to self assess as well as record assessments made by their teachers.
The multi abilities assessed are:
Personal, Social, Cognitive, Health, Creative and Physical.
Year 7 & 8
The key concepts of performance, creativity and healthy active lifestyles are delivered through a broad curriculum that encompasses a combination of multi-skills, traditional games and challenge activities, some of which are listed below.
Athletics, Badminton, Cricket, Dance, Health Related Fitness, Hockey, Football, Multi-skills, Outdoor & Adventurous Activities, Rugby, Swimming.
We have a range of lunchtime clubs, extra-curricular activities and teams which include:
Dance, Netball, Football, Badminton, Basketball, Trampolining, Rounders, , Karate, Athletics and Sports Hall Athletics, Stretch ‘n’ Flex, Table Tennis, Boxing, Cheerleading and Rugby.
Year 9
Students in Year 9 opt for one of two pathways.
“Creative & Games” or “Competitive/Tactical”.
Each pathway has a selection of activities which allow the students to continue to explore the National Curriculum range content in greater depth, and allows students to develop their physical and creative skills further. Students will have the opportunity to transfer their skills to new or alternative activities where appropriate.
Examples of some of the activities are outlined below;
Netball, Football, Ultimate Frisbee, Dance, Aqua Sports, Rounders, Cricket, Volleyball, Basketball, Health Related Fitness, Trampolining, Bowls, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, etc.
As with years 7 and 8 students are assessed through multi abilities using an Assessment for Learning Profile Wheel, where they have an opportunity to self assess as well as record assessments made by their teachers. Each ability ranges from level 1 up to level 8, and in each ability most students should achieve level 5, by then end of year 9, with more gifted and talented students achieving higher levels in two or more abilities.

In Years 10 and 11 students follow a selection one of the two pathways from year 9 for their core PE lessons, and also have to option to take the JSLA course through their core lesson time. See the BTEC and GCSE options for examination courses that are also available
