Geography Field Trip Geography Field Trip

 

Year 7

In the first term, students will be taught how to conduct a geographical enquiry on the settlement in which they live. They will then learn mapping skills, including grid references, height, measurement and scale and direction using 1:50000 and 1:25000 Ordinance Survey maps.

In the second term students will identify the location of Great Britain on the earth’s surface. This will be followed by an investigation into the characteristics of settlements in the local area, and the reasons for their location, growth and nature. Students will undertake a field study based on ‘function’ in a settlement and reasons for change in function over time.

In the third term students will learn about the geography of crime - location, causes of crime and possible solutions.

Students will also complete a study on world sport.

Students will be taught how use Google Earth as a geographical tool.

Students will be expected to use ICT for research and preparation.

Throughout KS3 students will be set targets and given advice on how to achieve the next level of attainment based on the National Curriculum criteria.

 

Year 8

Students will begin in Y8 with a study of the European Union and the changes in the quality of life inFrance since its membership of the EU.

Using a variety of sources, students will investigate the physical factors, including weathering and erosion, which have moulded the European landscape. A study of river valleys will be followed by an in-depth study of flooding, focussing eventually on Boscastle and the Mississippi Basin in the USA. Students will use Google Earth to complete a specific study of the Mississippi Basin.

In the second term, we examine the global distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes. Students will investigate the relationship between earthquakes, volcanoes and plate margins; they further consider the social and economic implications of these phenomena.

The final study of the year is into the global distribution of population and why people decide to live where they do in large and small numbers.

Students will be expected to use ICT for research and presentation.

 

Year 9

Students will be taught the cause of world differences in climate. They will then apply their knowledge to develop an understanding of hurricanes and the effects of global warming and acid rain on the environment.

Students will be taught to use mapping and statistical testing to assess stages of development in nations. They will then research an economically developing country, Brazil, looking at lifestyles, political pressure and environmental issues.

Students will extend their investigation into development, using local environmental issues, in particular water pollution in the North Sea. Students will also investigate the changing global geography of the car and fashion industries.

Students will be expected to use ICT for research and presentation.
